We appreciate those who came out on a drizzly Wednesday afternoon to discuss shoreline stabilization best practices as part of our Planning in the Wild workshop series!
Sam Roy, Geospatial Data Science Manager, State Resilience Office, and Taylor Spencer, Coastal Processes Specialist, Maine Sea Grant were our guest speakers, sharing on the range of options for shoreline stabilization solutions. Such strategies include 'green infrastructure' - vegetative plantings, for example - and 'grey infrastructure' such as breakwaters and bulkheads.
Attendees also heard from Shelley Gallagher, Director, Bristol Parks and Recreation, on the success of their dune restoration program following the series of winter storms in January 2024.
Bristol's project at Pemaquid Beach Park was cost-effective and didn't require permitting from Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), making it quick to implement and a creative nature-based solution to rebuild the dune structure and native vegetation to pre-storm levels.
This workshop was energizing to attend, especially when hearing more about Bristol's case study, which can easily be replicated in other beach systems in the State.
The slide deck presented by Sam and Taylor is provided below for those interested in learning more!
