Talking about the future: Newcastle Next

The Town of Newcastle is taking on an ambitious project: holding weekly community conversations between June and November.

The 'Newcastle Next' conversation series offers an opportunity for residents to learn about a number of projects the community is looking to undertake in the next several years and offer their thoughts. Questions are encouraged, and discussion - including disagreement - is a must. The Select Board and Town Manager want to be sure that what's being proposed is supported by residents and is the future the Town wants to see for Newcastle.

The first workshop, held on May 28th, provided an overview of what will be discussed over the course of the next 6+ months. The second event, held on June 4th, looked at economic development considerations.

Attendees sketched out thoughts on adding pedestrian and cycling improvements, discussed creative ways to slow traffic, and what type of community spaces they envision in the downtown. Creative suggestions included an ice cream truck parked on Main Street during summer events, holiday lights in the pocket park to welcome the winter season, and park benches placed under street trees for those taking a stroll who might want to sit a spell and enjoy the breeze.

At both events, food was a driver in making the conversations a community event. A good ol' potluck brought folks together to enjoy a meal before diving into discussion. LCRPC is impressed by this process and we're seeing these types of events gaining momentum in Lincoln County.

Bremen, currently underway with their comprehensive plan update, is already planning to talk with residents at annual community events, as well as canvasing to ensure those who might prefer to stay home still get a say in the Town's future. The power a cup of coffee and a chat with a neighbor can bring to the engagement process is not being overlooked by Bremen.

In Bristol, the Parks and Recreation Department shoreline stabilization project received strong support from the community. Because the Town was proactive in including visitors and residents on project updates, those walking the beach this winter knew to move downed branches into the dune system to capture sand and build up the dune structure.

It's a pleasure to work in Lincoln County where discussion is encouraged - and lively - about a number of town needs. This is the point of planning! Keep up the good work!
